do you care about problems that don't concern your personal well-being?

Social justice; the "idea of creating a society or institution that is based on the principles of equality and solidarity that understands and values human rights and that recognizes the dignity of every human being" (Novak, 2000)

Social justice. A topic that has been brought up this week much more than I've ever seen in a few years. The story of how one issue, or one cause can become so much greater, because of how a person decided to edit a video and select particular, articulate and emotive words that could manipulate an individual into feeling a certain way.

But despite all the technical jargon, the message in all these videos always remains the same. The world is full of poverty, hunger, lack of natural resources, adequate capital structures, health centres/clinics,lessons in basic hygiene, and basic education for future generations.

It doesn’t matter if you support kony2012 or not. And personally, the whole "make him famous" thing, feels as if we are unintentionally and subliminally celebrating who he is, and his power. I also don’t like the whole concept of rejoicing in ones arrest, but what I do BELIEVE in is the justice and rights of the people whom for decades have had to live lives very different to ones they could’ve and should've lived only because that very choice was taken away from them.

Perhaps our weekly thoughts should be "what did we do for the least of these?" and "What and HOW will WE (both personally and as humanity) continually aid the least of these people ? " Those very same people who cry out, scream out for help in the simplest ways, for the possessions of rights of which their entire existence to us readers, is not at all questioned, but merely taken for granted, and seen "simply" as a birthright.

KONY may seem like a trend right now, but the consequences, the good ones, will have perennial and lasting affects for past, now and future generations who WILL then get to decide how to live and how to love, because they would’ve been shown how to love by millions of strangers who CHOSE to listen to their stories, and donate to this very cause. They will be shown how to live a life of peace and freedom, and one where the very nature of love is not dependant on race, religion, social status, sexual orientation, gender, but rather on the fact that there is a “good” that exists in this world.

So to those hating on this cause, and any other causes similar to this, need to perhaps take a good look at themselves, because the world has much bigger problems to deal with then selfishness. I’m sorry that this seems a little rash, but the fact is that one day these children will be ruling the very constitutions that govern our laws, and the choices we make now, not tomorrow, can help create a wave of difference. So who cares if it’s a trend or not? If it leads to people supporting this cause, and helping to make a difference then it shouldn’t matter.

Change starts when something within you is stirred and then manifested into actions.

                     Thoughtfully yours, grace anne sicat
